Trip to Filipova Huť
Filipova Huť is one of the most popular destinations in Šumava, and for good reason. If you enjoy open landscapes, distant views, and the silence of mountain settlements, this route will deliver. It is a pleasant walk that works reliably in summer and winter and won't disappoint in autumn either.
Start comfortably from your room
A huge advantage of this hike is that your starting line is right here at our Helena Honesová guesthouse in Horská Kvilda. You can leave your car keys on the nightstand and save yourself the morning stress of finding a parking spot. The route leads you out of the village and continues across sun-drenched plains and fragrant coniferous forests with a very gentle climb. The trail profile is so friendly that even younger hikers or seniors can easily conquer it, whether on foot, in the saddle of a bicycle, or on cross-country skis in winter.
The highest settlement and the king of Šumava peaks
As soon as the trees part, the destination of your journey welcomes you. Filipova Huť boasts the title of the highest permanently inhabited settlement in the Czech Republic, situated at an impressive 1,093 meters above sea level.
What you should know about this magical place:
- Glassmaking roots: The settlement was founded at the end of the 18th century for the production of hollow glass. Although the ancient kilns have long since crumbled, the original scattered layout of Šumava cottages has retained its historical character to this day.
- Iconic viewpoint: This is where you will take the most beautiful souvenir photos. Across the vast meadows, an unobstructed view opens up of Malý and Velký Roklan, which are affectionately nicknamed the "Breasts of the Mother of God."
- Oasis of calm: The local plains and fens offer a perfect escape from the daily rush and provide an ideal space for relaxation in the clean mountain air.
What to remember before you leave
Before you click the door shut behind you, think of a few practical details:
- Layering pays off: At altitudes above a thousand meters, the temperature can drop unexpectedly and it is often breezy. Therefore, equip yourself with a windproof jacket and opt for stable, ideally waterproof footwear, as Šumava paths can be unpredictable after morning dew or rain.
- Orientation without signal: You won't be able to make calls or connect to data everywhere in the national park. It's better to download a map to your smartphone in the morning using our Wi-Fi so that nothing surprises you along the way.
- Where to leave the car: While your vehicle rests safely in our reserved parking, any friends arriving for the trip from elsewhere will need to use the paid central parking lot directly in Horská Kvilda (which, however, tends to fill up early, so the early bird rule applies).
